Though pike and shield are plied wildly,

慘澹鬥龍蛇。

Dragon and serpent-like forces clash with dire consequences.

And sadly serpent and dragon clash,

甘澤不猶愈，

Is excessive rain truly better than drought?

Is not the sweet moisture still better?

且耕今未賡。

It is not yet too late to begin plowing.

The plowing is now not something remote.

丈夫則帶甲，

The men are in military, wearing armor.

Though the husband is off wearing armor,

婦女終在家。

The women remain at home in the end.

The wife remains at home in the end.

力難及黍稷，

Their strength may not suffice to grow grain.

Though her strength may not be up to millet,

得種菜與麻。

But they can manage to plant vegetables and hemp.

千載商山芝，

For a thousand years, the hermits of Shang Mountain have fed on Lingzhi mushrooms.

When men grand and worthy meet rocky roads,

遠引蟠泥沙。

They retreat far away and coil in the mud.

They take themselves far, and coil in mud.

顧慚昧所適，

Reflecting on this, I am ashamed to be ignorant of where I belong.

On reflection, I am ashamed that I don’t know where to go,

回首白日斜。

Looking back, I see the sun setting.

As I turn my head, the bright sun is sinking.

漢陰有鹿門，
