I'm not getting push notifications, so I went to check my notification settings and it crashes every time I try to open them.

I mean, I already paid for it, but it seems like it would be better (or in addition) to use a
request when the app is opened. The results of this are cached locally so it doesn't have to make a network request every time. https://developer.android.com/google/play/billing/api.html
